Auguste Piccard
Auguste Jean-Felix
Auguste Piccard, (January 28, 1884 - March 24, 1962) was a Swiss inventor.
"Piccard and his twin brother Jean-Felix, were born in Basel, Switzerland.
Showing an intense interest in science as a child, he attended the Federal Polytechnic School of Switzerland, and became a professor of physics at the University of Brussels in 1922.
In 1930, an interest in ballooning, and a curiosity about the upper atmosphere led him to design a spherical, pressurized aluminum gondola which would allow ascent to great altitude without requiring a pressure suit. Supported by the Belgian Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) Piccard constructed his gondola.
On May 27, 1931, Auguste and Paul Kipfer took off from Augsburg, Germany, and reached a record altitude of 15,785 m (51,775 ft). During this flight, Piccard was able to gather substantial data on the upper atmosphere, as well as measure cosmic rays.

On August 18, 1932, lauched from Zurich, Switzerland, Piccard and Max Cosyns made a second record-breaking ascent to 16,200 m (53,152 ft). He ultimately made a total of twenty-seven balloon flights setting a final record of 23,000 m (72,177 ft).
In the mid '30s, Piccard's interests shifted when he realized that a modification of some of his atmospheric balloon concepts whould allow descent into the deep ocean. By 1937, he'd designed a small steel gondola to withstand great external pressure, construction began but was interrupted by the outbreak of war. Resuming work in 1945 the steel gondola for personnel was completed and a large float was attached for buoyancy using gasoline as the medium. To make the now floating craft sink, tons of iron were attached to the float with a release mechanism.
This craft was named FNRS-2 and made a number of unmanned dives in 1948 before being gifted to the French navy in 1950. There it was redesigned, and in 1954 it took a man safely down 4,176 m (13,700 ft).
With the experience of FNRS-2 Piccard and his son Jacques built the improved Bathyscaphe Trieste.

Piccard made over 100 dives, mainly off Italy, from 1954 before before selling her to the US Navy in 1957 for $250,000.
Auguste Piccard died 1962 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Auguste Piccard his supposed to have been the inspiration for Professor Cuthbert Calculus (Professeur Tryphon Tournesol) in Tintin".

Jean-Felix Piccard Inventor of the plastic film balloon
"Jean Piccard, twin brother of Auguste (who made the first stratospheric balloon flight) was born in Basle, Switzerland, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1931. He earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Swiss Institute of Technology in Zurich, in 1909. From 1926 to 1929, he taught organic chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Jean Piccard and his wife, Jeannette, made a balloon ascension from Dearborn, Michigan on 23 October 1934 and reached an altitude of 17,672 m. (57,979 ft). During the course of this night, they tested a liquid oxygen system. As a result of the experience gained on this night, Jean was instrumental in the development of a liquid oxygen converter for use in balloons and high flying aircraft. In 1936, he developed and launched the first plastic film balloon, which was the forerunner of modern balloons. He later devised the multiple balloon concept and in 1937 made the first manned ascent utilizing multiple balloons. He was also instrumental in the design of polyethylene high altitude balloons which permitted successful manned flights to altitudes in excess of 30,480 m. (100,000 ft)".
At:
"Jean-Felix, had been involved as a balloonist during World War I while serving in the Swiss Army. Piccard Pere taught his son the value of safety. Don Piccard remembers, "Everything he did, he was very, very cautious," including playing with bears in Yellowstone National Park back in 1916. "Everything I wanted to do," no matter what, "he was with me, emphasizing the safety aspects." This safety awareness, instilled early in life, was to serve Piccard well during his years as a balloon designer.
The older Piccard was initially a chemist and explosive's engineer for Hercules Powder Company. He first flew for scientific purposes with his twin brother, Auguste, in 1913. Jean-Felix Piccard, flying with his wife Jeannette, set a stratospheric altitude record for the USA of 57,037 feet (11 miles or 18 kilometers) in 1934, surpassing brother Auguste's 27 May 1931 record of 51,762 feet (15.781 kilometers).
To understand the importance of these accomplishments, you must realize that previous ascents had shown that flying into the stratosphere could be fatal and that to penetrate the isothermal layer, with its low pressure, a new kind of balloon would have to be built. Auguste Piccard built such a balloon in 1930, equipped with a pressurized, air-tight cabin and an envelope large enough and with sufficient ascent strength that, on departure, it need not be completely filled. This important feature is explained by the Universal Gas Law. As a balloon rises into the atmosphere, gases within the envelope will expand, increasing pressure, as the atmospheric pressure outside decreases.
Other innovations from the twin brothers included a frost-resistant window for high altitude balloon gondolas and an electronic system for emptying ballast bags designed by Jean-Felix. Jean-Felix also experimented with plastic balloons and helped design the polyethylene Skyhook series of high altitude balloons that the United States Air Force used for manned flights. The Skyhooks rose to over 100,000 feet to collect upper atmospheric weather data.

A.Piccard's inscription: "For to live, Man must to fight. His endeavors must be aimed towards the boundary of the achievable" (My rough translation from French).
Trying to extract some keywords for Orcus (2004 DW):
"Fight for Survival", "Intrusions in Stranger Environments", "Endeavors Aimed Towards the Boundary of the Achievable".
